New Façades improve Downtown Tunica

Three buildings, built in the early 1900s in downtown Tunica, recently received "facelifts" with the help of the Tunica Main Street façade grant program. The building owners applied for and received grants to re-do and paint the building façades.

The building at the end of the block was completed in November 2011 and the other two buildings were completed in February 2012. The buildings are now home to residents and a new business.

"The blue [thrift store] building was re-painted first, and that started the ball rolling," said Lynn Ryals, Director of Tunica Main Street. "When the merchant started looking to open a business here, she looked at the building and inquired about the grant."

The building was re-painted tan, and the grant was completed before the merchant opened the store. It is now home to the Upscale Thrift Store.

The other two buildings contained a grocery store on one side and a residence on the other side. After the grocery closed, the building sat vacant for years. Now, the buildings bear updated storefronts and are used as a residence and for storage.

"It has made a huge difference on the east side of the street," Ryals said.

"The new thrift store is having great business," she added.

Ryals said visits from the MSU First Impressions Team and the Mississippi Development Authority's Asset Development Team contributed to the progress.

"They both mentioned this area in their presentations and said something needed to be done," Ryals said. "Now it has and what a difference!"

Ryals said building owners must submit an application to the Tunica Main Street Design Committee for a façade grant project. Tunica Main Street will reimburse up to $1000 on each project.

The applicant must also use approved historic colors, Ryals said.

Tunica Main Street offers three grants per year.

"If anyone ever says a façade grant will not help the downtown, just look at the before and after pictures," Ryals said. "What a big difference it has made!"
